Committee named to search for next chancellor
at Purdue Calumet

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke will meet Thursday (10/12) with the newly appointed committee assigned to search for the next chancellor for the Purdue Calumet campus.

James W. Yackel will retire after 11 years as chancellor in July.

A dozen of the 15 committee members are from the Calumet campus, including the chair, Gloria Smokvina, dean of the Schools of Professional Programs and head of the School of Nursing. The Lake County community will be represented by Calvin E. Bellamy, chairman and chief executive officer of the Hammond-based Bank Calumet, formerly Calumet National Bank. Bellamy received an honorary doctorate during the spring 1999 Purdue Calumet commencement exercises. The others from Purdue Calumet are:

Moina M. Bey, chairman of the Clerical and Service Staff Advisory Council.

Michael J. Flannery, head, Department of Behavioral Sciences.

Michael J. Guevara, president of the Purdue Alumni Association-Calumet.

Viral R. Kathrotiya, president of the student body.

Lorrell D. Kilpatrick, former president of the student body.

Cyril P. Obi, professor of management.

Rebecca H. Stankowski, professor of library sciences and chair of the Faculty Senate.

Edward L. Vockell, professor of education.

Frederick C. Williams, director of Student Support Services.

Mohammad A. Zahraee, head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology.

Chenn Q. Zhou, professor of mechanical engineering.

The two other committee members are Carolyn T. Jones, assistant executive vice president for academic affairs, based at the West Lafayette campus; and Michael A. Wartell, chancellor, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

James, who will be 65 next year, is a professor of mathematical sciences. He joined the Purdue Calumet staff in 1987 after 21 years on the West Lafayette campus faculty. After three years as vice chancellor for academic affairs, he was named chancellor in 1990.

Purdue Calumet, based in Hammond, is a comprehensive, regional university that offers associate, baccalaureate and master's degrees, plus professional certificates in about 100 fields of study. Its enrollment of more than 9,000 students represents the largest concentration of Purdue students at any regional campus. Since its post-World War II evolvement, more than 25,000 graduates have earned more than 30,000 degrees at Purdue Calumet.

The chancellor, who answers to the Purdue president and Board of Trustees, heads the Purdue Calumet campus, providing leadership over academic, administrative, advancement, student services, and outreach functions and activities. The chancellor is responsible for directing Purdue Calumet's leadership role in enhancing the Northwest Indiana Calumet region and for supporting its people, businesses and industries.
