Faculty and staff honors Don K. Gentry, dean of Purdue's School of Technology, was appointed chairman of the Engineering Technology Council, an affiliate of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). Some of the council's objectives are to assess and recommend policies affecting the overall administration of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, and to provide forums for discussion and an information exchange concerning problems and experiences of technical colleges and institutions. Founded in 1893, the ASEE is a nonprofit member organization comprised of more than 12,000 deans, professors, instructors, students and industry representatives dedicated to promoting and improving engineering and technology education. During his two-year term as ETC chairman, Gentry also will serve as a member of the ASEE's board of directors. Purdue Bands presented the Block "P" Award to Purdue Alumni Association director Larry Preo at the 2000 Homecoming football game on Sept. 23. Preo, a West Lafayette resident, was honored for his long record of support and involvement with Purdue Bands. The Block "P" Award, created in 1994, is presented annually to a band supporter who is not an alumnus of the university. The Alumni Association's support has helped make several band trips possible, most notably the Purdue Jazz Band's performing trips to California in 1999 and Europe in 2000, along with the marching band's trips to bowl games. Alumni honors Purdue Bands presented its Alumni Achievement Award to Intel executive Gene Meieran at the 2000 Homecoming football game on Sept. 23. Meieran resides in Chandler, Ariz., and has worked for Intel Corp. since 1973. He is a 1959 Purdue graduate who played piccolo in the "All-American" Marching Band and flute in concert band. He was presented with the Alumni Achievement Award for accomplishments in the corporate world. Purdue Bands has presented the award annually since 1994. Meieran's bachelor's degree in metallurgy from Purdue was followed by a doctorate in materials science from MIT.
