September 22, 2000 Purdue Black Cultural Center workshop talks dollars and senseWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Purdue University Black Cultural Center will offer a workshop, "A Financial Fitness Workout," Sept. 30. The workshop, led by Purdue graduate and Merrill Lynch financial consultant Baron Murdock, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room 310 of Stewart Center. The event is free and open to the public but reservations are required by calling (765) 494-3097. The workshop, part of the BCC's "Talking Dollars and Making Sense" series of wealth building and financial empowerment workshops, is designed to bring both the campus and Greater Lafayette information that will enable the African-American community to become more money savvy. Murdock, an Indiana native, joined Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith in December 1998. He manages investment portfolios for high net worth individuals and business owners. Before joining Merrill Lynch, Baron was employed by Citibank and Edward Jones Investments. Previously, he worked in the trust department of a regional bank in South Bend, Ind., where he received his securities licenses. "This is a great opportunity to learn how to ensure personal financial fitness for ourselves, our family and our community," said Joseph Jones, BCC night operations supervisor. "The workshop will allow us to take the first few steps to declaring a lifelong commitment to financial empowerment." Established at Purdue in 1969, the BCC is nationally recognized and acknowledged by the Association of Black Culture Centers as one of the best centers of its kind. The center, according to BCC director Renee Thomas, helps black students gain a greater understanding of their heritage and supports and enhances cultural diversity on campus and in the community. Thomas said the BCC serves as a catalyst for a host of cultural, educational, artistic, social and technological initiatives and provides an environment that fosters cross-cultural exchanges and noteworthy research, as well as artistic expression through music, dance, drama and creative writing.
