September 22, 2000 Week of activities to highlight nuclear science, engineeringWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Nuclear Activities Week at Purdue University, Monday through Friday (9/25-29), will feature a variety of events focusing on issues, research and opportunities surrounding nuclear science and engineering. The public can view poster displays, attend discussions on nuclear safety and the future of nuclear power, and tour campus labs and facilities, including Purdue's research nuclear reactor. Highlights of the week will include: Poster displays on various aspects of Purdue's nuclear research, from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday (9/25) and Wednesday (9/27), in the atrium of the Materials and Electrical Engineering Building. Denis Beller, a nuclear engineer from the Los Alamos National Laboratory, will give a seminar titled "A Nuclear Future: The Need for Nuclear Power," from 3:30 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. on Monday (9/25) in Room 210 of Matthews Hall. A tour of the nuclear engineering thermal hydraulics laboratories, at the Purdue Airport, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. on Tuesday (9/26). Tours of the Purdue research reactor from 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 2:20 p.m. on Thursday and Friday (9/28-29). Robert Bean, director of the radiation laboratories at Purdue, will give a seminar titled "The Human Side of Nuclear Safety: A Look at the Emotional Response to Radiation," from 3:30 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. on Friday (9/29) in Room 104 of the Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry. The week-long series of events is sponsored by Purdue's School of Nuclear Engineering and the health physics and nuclear pharmacy programs.
