September 15, 2000 Appointments and promotions Gerald J. Lynch, associate professor of economics, has been named associate dean for programs and student services for the Krannert School of Management. Lynch is currently associate director of the German International Graduate School of Management and Administration in Hanover. He will begin his duties as associate dean on Jan. 1, 2001. Dennis Engi, a Purdue alumnus and chief scientist at Sandia National Laboratories, has been named head of Purdue's School of Industrial Engineering, effective Sept. 11. Engi replaced Dale Compton, a professor of industrial engineering who served as interim head of the school for two years. Engi, who was selected after a year-long search, has served in a variety of capacities at Sandia since 1976. He had been Sandia's chief scientist since 1997, managed its Strategic Initiatives and Strategic Technologies departments, and supervised its Geo Systems Division. Engi also initiated and managed Sandia's Global Approaches to Infrastructure Assurance project, which is designed to provide the tools decision-makers need for managing infrastructures that are critical to the political, social, and economic stability in regions important to the United States. Engi earned three Purdue degrees: a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1971; a master's degree in industrial engineering in 1974; and a doctorate in industrial engineering in 1976. He has received Purdue's Outstanding Industrial Engineer award, the "Paper of the Year" award from the International Association for Mathematical Geology, a letter of commendation from the U.S. Secretary of Energy, the Intelligence Community Seal Medallion from the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and Sandia's Award for Excellence. Campus activities The Harold L. Michael Traffic Operations Laboratory will be dedicated during a brief ceremony at 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 26 in Room 1113 of the Civil Engineering Building. Designed to educate new civil engineers in the field of intelligent transportation systems, the laboratory is the first of its kind in Indiana. Cristine Klika, commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation, will speak at the dedication ceremony.
