Lectures focus on environmental cleanup

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University is holding a series of lectures focusing on issues and technologies critical to environmental cleanup.

The Monsanto Lecture Series, presented by the Environmental Sciences and Engineering Institute at Purdue, features specialists from government, universities and the private sector. The lectures, which are free and open to the public, are held each Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. in Room 3153 of the Civil Engineering Building on Purdue's West Lafayette campus.

The series is jointly sponsored by ESEI and Purdue's School of Civil Engineering. Ronald Turco, director of ESEI, and Suresh Rao, the Reith Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering, have developed the seminar series in conjunction with a graduate course entitled "Remediation of Contaminated Soils and Groundwater."

The following is a list of the lectures:

Sept. 12 – Evan Nyer, Arcadis-Gerharty-Miller, Tampa, Fla., Geology Controls Remediation.

Sept. 19 – Dale Helmers, NiSource, Merrillville, Ind., Remediation of Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) Sites.

Sept. 26 – Eric Weber, USEPA, Athens, Ga., to be announced.

Oct. 3 – Patricia Cline, Golder Associates, Gainesveille, Fla., Endocrine Disrupter Chemicals.

Oct. 17 – Pedro Alvarez, University of Iowa, Combining Phytoremediation and Bioremediation.

Oct. 24 – Ron Falta, Clemson University, Clemson, S.C., Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (NAPL) mobilization systems.

Oct. 31 – Vicki Keramida, Keramida Engineering, Indianapolis, Cleaning up Indiana’s Contaminated Sites.

Nov. 7 – Bob Siegrest, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colo., In-Situ Oxidation Systems.

Nov. 14 – Mike Kavanaugh, Malcolm-Pirnie, Oakland, Calif., Remediation Technology Performance Overview.

Nov. 28 – Charlie Menzie, Menzie-Cura Associates, Chelmsford, Mass., Risk Assessment in Remediation Systems.

Dec. 5 – Bob Peters, Argonne National Labs, Argonne, Ill., Integrating Remediation Technologies.
