Purdue features sculpture, rally at Sept. 22-24 Homecoming

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The dedication of a 45-foot sculpture will be part of the numerous activities planned at Purdue University's 2000 Homecoming, Sept. 22-24.

The weekend includes breakfasts and brunches, receptions and open houses, lunches and tailgate parties, and a pep rally, all revolving around the football game against Big Ten rival Minnesota. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:10 a.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

The School of Veterinary Medicine will dedicate a major new sculpture at 9 a.m. Sept. 23 in front of Lynn Hall, facing Harrison Street. Named the "Continuum," it is an original bronze sculpture depicting the enduring relationship between humans and animals. The "Continuum" begins with prehistoric cave drawings and progresses to show life-size animals of today and the ways in which the human-animal bond is nurtured by veterinary practice.

Nearly 45 feet long and nine feet tall at its highest point, the sculpture is anticipated to be a dramatic, interactive symbol of the school's mission to teach, research and practice the highest level of animal care, said Kevin Doerr, director of alumni relations and annual giving for the School of Veterinary Medicine.

Game spirit will start building with a pep rally, Boiler Fan Fest, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Slayter Center of Performing Arts. The rally – open to all Purdue supporters – will feature celebrities, band music, free food and beverages, and give-aways.

Purdue Pete, Rowdy, cheerleaders, the Boilermaker Special and other celebrities will join the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band's pep band for the event. The give-aways will include 3,000 black-and-gold pom pons. The free food and refreshments will be provided by the Office of Housing and Food Service. Event sponsors include Purdue Student Government, Purdue Student Union Board, Purdue Foundation Student Board, the Reamers Club and the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association.

On game day Saturday, The Purdue Alumni Association will be greeting former students at the Alumni Cafe at the corner of Stadium and Intramural drive starting three hours before kickoff, said Sharon Martin, director of communications for the alumni association. Alumni can find a schedule of events for reunion classes by stopping the main office of the Purdue Alumni Association, Room 160, Purdue Memorial Union.

Purdue Bands will entertain with free "Arrive Early, Celebrate Late" performances at Slayter Center before the game and near Hovde Hall after the game. Purdue Musical Organizations will sponsor the Boilermaker Corral Tent three hours before kickoff at the Ackerman Golf Course. Admission to the corral tent is $16.

The Purdue Boilermakers will open their Big Ten season against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Pregame activities will include introductions of the football team, coaches, managers, cheerleaders and the 1999 Homecoming king and queen. Half-time festivities will include the announcement of the 2000 Homecoming king and queen by the Purdue Student Union Board and a performance by the "All-American" Marching Band.

The Purdue Black Alumni Organization has several activities scheduled during Homecoming Weekend. A welcome reception is schedule for 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Black Cultural Center, 1100 Third St. The group also is sponsoring a hospitality suite at the Radisson Hotel in Lafayette starting at 8 p.m. Admission is $5.

The group's annual business meeting will start at 9 a.m. Sept. 23 at the Black Cultural Center. A tailgate party in the center's parking lot will follow the football game. Meals will cost $10 for adults or $5 for Purdue students and children age 12 and under.

The Purdue Black Alumni Organization Homecoming Dance will be 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Sept. 23, at the Radisson Hotel. Music will be provided by DJ Cisco. Other activities include a silent auction and a drawing for door prizes.

For Homecoming Weekend, Purdue Convocations has booked two performances of the Broadway musical "Jekyll & Hyde." Shows will be 7:30 p.m. Thursday Sept. 21, and 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 in the Elliott Hall of Music. Tickets are $30, $26 or $18 and available by calling (800) 914-SHOW.
