45-foot bronze sculpture of the human-animal bond installed at Purdue's vet school

Journalists can attend the installation of "Continuum", a landmark sculpture that depicts the evolution of man’s bond with animals throughout the centuries.

"Continuum" features seven distinct pieces, including a variety of life-sized animals and humans. One of the most striking elements is a cave wall scene 16-feet wide and nine-feet tall, depicting prehistoric animal shapes, as if they were actually cut out of the bronze.

Site preparation is underway in front of Lynn Hall on the south side of Purdue’s West Lafayette campus, and installation will begin Sunday, September 17 at approximately 12:00 noon. The installation is expected to take about three days to complete. Renowned artist Larry Anderson, who sculpted "Continuum" at his studio in Bonney Lake, Washington over an 18-month period, will supervise the installation. He will be available for interviews.

Dr. Alan Beck, director of Purdue's Center for the Human Animal Bond, says evidence of the benefits of interaction with animals continues to grow on many fronts.

"Our society has greatly elevated the level of respect for animals and their role as human companions," Beck says. "It is very appropriate to demonstrate our appreciation of the value of the human animal bond through this new and dramatic piece of public art."

Journalists can videotape or photograph the installation. CONTACT: Kevin Doerr (765) 494-8216. For stories about man's relationship to animals, contact Dr. Alan Beck, (765) 494-0854.
