Broadway musical tour of 'Jekyll & Hyde' stops at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Convocations presents a whirlwind odyssey pitting man against himself on Sept. 21 and 22 with Broadway's critically acclaimed musical "Jekyll & Hyde."

"An evocative tale of romance and the epic battle between good and evil, 'Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical' brings new life to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story," said Todd Wetzel, Purdue Convocations director.

Convinced the cure for his father's mental illness lies in the separation of Man's evil nature from his good, the brilliant Dr. Henry Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side. All havoc breaks loose on the streets of late 19th-century London when Dr. Jekyll's medical experiment backfires, giving life to Edward Hyde, his evil alter ego.

The musical version of the story offers elaborate sets, pyrotechnical special effects and melodic and popular musical pieces including "Someone Like You," "This is the Moment" and "In His Eyes."

As part of Purdue Convocations' Lively Arts Package, performances of "Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical" include a 7:30 p.m. show on Thursday, Sept. 21, and an 8 p.m. show on Friday, Sept. 22, in Elliott Hall of Music.

Single ticket prices cost $30, $26, and $18 for the general public, and $19, $16, and $14 for Purdue students. Prices on many individual performance tickets will increase Sept. 13. Tickets are available at Purdue box offices or charge by phone by calling (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.

Tickets for the entire Purdue Convocations' Lively Arts Package are still available and range from $36 to $138. Discounted prices on series subscriptions are available to Purdue retirees and their spouses, as well as senior citizens and all students. To order a season brochure that has complete ticket prices and details on all Purdue Convos' performances, call the box office or visit the new Purdue Convos' Web site.

Since its beginnings in 1990, and its opening on Broadway in 1997, "Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical" has received much praise and popularity, and has quite a large following among theater-goers around the country. The most well-known cast member in the touring production of "Jekyll & Hyde" is Annie Berthiaume, Canada's up and coming pop star. Berthiaume, who released her first French Canadian album in 1998, plays the part of Lucy, the love interest of Dr. Jekyll's evil counterpart.

The musical score was composed by Frank Wildhorn, who also is well known for his scores of "The Scarlett Pimpernel" and "The Civil War," both of which have gained popularity on Broadway.

Other performances included in Purdue Convos' Lively Arts Package are:

• "Die Fledermaus" by the Western Opera Theatre, 8 p.m. Oct. 21.
