August 18, 2000 Study abroad deadline approaching for studentsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University students planning to participate in university-sponsored overseas study programs during the upcoming spring semester have until Sept. 15 to turn in their application materials. Those enrolling for classes at Sophia University in Tokyo face an even tighter deadline Sept. 1. Opportunities for study abroad are open to every major in more than 40 countries, and programs are available for the entire academic year, a single semester or summer terms. More than 400 Purdue students spent a portion of the 1999-2000 school year studying in a foreign country and officials in the Programs for Study Abroad office anticipate similar participation this year. For that reason, students are encouraged to begin planning for their study abroad experience as early as possible. "This allows students to fit their time overseas into their overall academic plan and gives them a greater range of options," explains Jeff Sanson, assistant director for student services. "Students may go abroad as early as the summer session following their freshman year and as late as their senior year." The application form for all Purdue programs is available at the Programs for Study Abroad office in Young Graduate House, or online. Applicants are also asked to submit an essay, two letters of recommendation and an official transcript. The office will conduct a Study Abroad Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 20 on the Memorial Mall. Students will have an opportunity to talk with others who have participated in overseas study, learn about financial aid options and make an appointment with a study-abroad counselor.
