New or updated listings have two asterisks (**). All events in this calendar, plus many others, are listed in Purdue's online calendar. Updated travel directions around road construction zones near campus are available on the Web. EVENTS • Thursday, Aug. 24. 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Black Cultural Center's Cultural Arts Series: BCC Boilerfest New Student Orientation. BCC parking lot. Purdue students will have the opportunity to "get connected" with the African-American community. The event helps students learn about student organizations and meet a variety of resource people. ** • Friday, Aug. 25. 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Purdue Galleries receptions. Opportunity to tour all three galleries: Purdue Memorial Union's Robert L. Ringel Gallery exhibit "Normal Editions Workshop," displaying contemporary print-making selections from publishing facility at Illinois State University; Stewart Center Gallery exhibit "Beneath the Surface," showcasing large-scale paintings by West Lafayette artist and educator Fusun Gulen; and Creative Arts Building 2's Ralph G. Beelke Memorial Gallery exhibit "Don Dailey Industrial Design," featuring industrial design and products by this influential consumer designer. • Tuesday, Sept. 5. 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Jewish Studies Open House featuring the Lafayette Klezmorim band performing at 5 p.m. Anniversary Drawing Room, Purdue Memorial Union. • Saturday, Sept. 9. Parents' Day. Featured events are a convocation with the Purdue president at 9 a.m. in Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center, and the football game against Kent State University. ENTERTAINMENT • Thursday, Sept. 7. 7:30 p.m. Faustwork Mask Theatre, Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center. A part of the new Family Adventures series presented by Purdue Convocations. Tickets $7 for the public, $5 for Purdue students. **• Tuesday, Sept. 19. 7 p.m. Black Cultural Center's Cultural Arts Series: Play entitled "Chocolate on the Outside." Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. Four African-American co-workers who set out for a team building workshop retreat in the snow blown Appalachian Mountains. The roads soon become impassable leaving them stranded in a dusty, ill-equipped cabin. Despite personality conflicts, the four eventually agree to pass the time by engaging in a series of games. Through these games they inadvertently confront one another and explore intraracial issues that afflict many African-Americans. LECTURES • Wednesday, Aug. 23. 12:30 p.m. Jewish Studies Program Noon Lecture Series: Morris Pollard presents "A Dreyfus Affair - American Style." Room 320, Stewart Center. Pollard, a professor emeritus from the University of Notre Dame, is the father of convicted spy Jonathan Pollard. His presentation will include a review of his son's case and how it was managed. Seating is limited. • Friday, Sept. 1. 11:30 a.m. Krannert Executive Forum, Krannert Auditorium. D. Jerry Ehrlich: "Managing Growth." Ehrlich is president, chairman and chief executive officer of Lafayette's Wabash National Corp. • Wednesday, Sept. 6. 7 p.m. Black Cultural Center's Cultural Arts Series: Stephanie Stokes Oliver lectures on the "Seven Soulful Secrets for a Healthy Mind, Body and Spirit." Room 206, Stewart Center. Oliver was founding editor-in-chief of "Heart and Soul" magazine and held the post of editor of "Essence" magazine for many years. Her latest literary serving, "Daily Cornbread," provides a daily dose of suggestions to uplift, empower and motivate African-American women. • Friday, Sept. 8. 11:30 a.m. Krannert Executive Forum. Krannert Auditorium. Vicky L. Bailey, "The State of the Industry." Bailey is president of PSI Energy. ** • Friday, Sept. 15. 11:30 a.m. Krannert Executive Forum. Krannert Auditorium. Tom L. Hefner, "Six Years in the Life of a Public Company." Hefner is chairman and chief executive officer of Indianapolis-based Duke-Weeks Realty Corp., one of the nation's largest commercial real estate companies. EXHIBITS ** • Aug. 21-Oct. 7. Monthly, hour-long seminar invites faculty, staff, students and other interested individuals to network and learn more about how to start a company. Speakers are entrepreneurs, investors or consultants who work with new business ventures, primarily in the Purdue Research Park's business incubator system.
