Portion of Purdue Sports Center renovation on hold

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The $5 million expected renovation of Purdue University's Recreational Sports Center has been delayed until at least next year.

Although the university has the funding set aside, and the board of trustees approved the work earlier, the renovation cannot begin until the Indiana General Assembly authorizes sale of bonds to finance the project.

"Although the lawmakers have supported this project, we've encountered some technical problems that have held up the authorization," said Kenneth P. Burns, Purdue's executive vice president and treasurer. "We are optimistic that the 2001 General Assembly will approve the financing so we can begin work next year."

The bonds would be repaid from Sports Center fees.

The renovation work will focus on the basement area, which would then offer a new air-conditioned 30,000-square-foot cardiovascular strength-training area, said Carol Stickel, director of the Division of Recreational Sports.

Although that work is delayed, a different phase of renovation work at the Sports Center is almost complete, Stickel said.

Purdue has spent $1.8 million to make repairs and improvements in the gymnasiums and ventilation systems. A new fire alarm and sprinkler system has been installed. Two new lighted outdoor basketball courts should be ready for use in the next few weeks. By February, the north gymnasium will have a new sport court surface and dasher boards to accommodate indoor soccer, volleyball and hockey.
