August 2, 2000 Art gallery to be named for RingelWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The newly relocated art gallery in the Purdue Memorial Union will be renamed and dedicated in honor of Robert L. Ringel, executive vice president for academic affairs, on Tuesday (8/8). "In our university's history, few people have contributed as much as Bob Ringel," said Purdue President Steven C. Beering. "He has advanced academic excellence, embraced diversity, and celebrated science, culture and the arts. It is most fitting that we honor my close friend and trusted colleague with this lasting testimonial." In suggesting the gallery naming, School of Liberal Arts Dean Margaret M. Rowe noted, "Bob Ringel has given significant and consistent support to the arts. He recognizes that the arts are integral to the identity of the university." A brief dedication program will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, in the Great Hall of the Purdue Memorial Union, to be followed by visits to the nearby gallery and a reception. The gallery opened earlier this year in the former browsing library at the southeast corner of the Union on the main floor. The Union Gallery formerly was located on the west side of the building, but was closed when the Purdue Alumni Association remodeled and enlarged its offices. Ringel, Purdue's chief academic officer since 1991 and the university's Donald S. Powers Distinguished University Administrator, announced early in 2000 that he would relinquish the executive vice presidency this calendar year to return to full-time faculty status in the Department of Audiology and Speech Sciences. He has held a range of administrative positions in his 34-year Purdue career, including vice president and dean of the Graduate School, dean of the School of Humanities, Social Science and Education (now the School of Liberal Arts), and head of the Department of Audiology and Speech Sciences. Ringel received his master's degree in audiology and speech science in 1960 and his doctorate in speech science and speech pathology in 1962, both from Purdue. Sources: Steven C.
