Events Weeks: 7/28/00 - 8/16/00For additional information, call (765) 494-8396 August 3: Taste Of Indiana ReceptionThe evening runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Farm Bureau Building at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented to the winners of the 2000 Indy International Wine Competition. The "Winningest" Indiana vintner will receive the Governor's trophy. The Best of Show will be awarded the American Airlines trophy. Reception tickets can be purchased for $15 by calling the State Fair ticket office at (317) 927-1482 or at the door. The admission fee includes a souvenir wine glass and an opportunity to sample the wines entered in the competition. Hors d'oeuvres will be provided by Indiana's major commodity groups. With music, rides, food, dancing and animals, this longtime Hoosier tradition is fun for the whole family. Purdue University will be present to provide information on healthy families, biotechnology and environmental issues. The Pioneer Hi-Bred Our Land Pavilion will house many Purdue Cooperative Extension service activities and information booths. The pavilion is open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. More than 300 campus staff, Extension educators and Master Gardeners will be on hand to staff the exhibits. Fairgoers can learn healthy eating tips and preventive skin care information from Consumer and Family Science experts. Parenting strategies and Money 2000plu$, a program to help consumers regain control of their finances, also will be part of the activities. Visitors can learn how biotechnology is part of the pizza-making process. Purdue Master Gardeners and plant and pest diagnostic experts will answer questions about horticulture, pest management and backyard wildlife management. Prospective students can receive information about Purdue's School of Agriculture. Indiana families can learn how Purdue animal science research impacts them and agriculture. Another exhibit will show what Extension is doing to ensure safe water. Across the fairgrounds from the Pioneer Hi-Bred Our Land Pavilion will be the Pathway to Water Quality exhibit. The outdoor exhibit will explain watershed, water collection and how Hoosiers use land and care for natural resources. The Incredible Journey game will teach children about different water sources such as clouds, oceans and Arctic ice. The Pathway to Water Quality is open daily 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Discount tickets for the Indiana State Fair can be purchased for $4 at Marsh Supermarkets, CVS/pharmacies, Union Federal Bank, the Marten House Hotel and all county Farm Bureau offices. August 12: 4-H Day At The Indiana State Fair4-H adult leaders will be recognized in the Farm Bureau Building auditorium at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. with registration at the west door. Qualifying 4-H leaders will receive a special recognition ribbon to wear throughout the day. Other 4-H activities located in the Farm Bureau Building include the State 4-H Fashion Revue at 1 p.m.; the 4-H Youth Congress finalist trip winners at 2:30 p.m.; and the 4-H rabbit awards at 3:30 p.m. 4-H Youth Action demonstrations will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the 4-H Exhibit Hall. At the Marsh Ag/Hort Building stage, the 4-H public speaking contest will last all day. August 16: Farmer's Day At The Indiana State FairFarmers will gather at the fair to share in Indiana's rich agricultural history. The Farmer's Day Parade will start at 10 a.m. near the Marsh Grandstand. Special Farmer's Day activities will run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. in the Union Federal Bank Southwest Pavilion (senior citizen's building). A celebrity milking contest will take place at 11:30 a.m. in the Livestock Nursery presented by Toyota. In the Pioneer Village, fair visitors can watch old time farming demonstrations at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and a tractor parade at 6 p.m. CONTACT: Indiana State Fair, (317) 927-7500.
