July 5, 2000 Purdue Summer Band to perform at Slayter CenterWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Tango tunes, Broadway favorites, a Sousa march and more will fill an outdoor concert offered by the Purdue University Summer Band on Tuesday (7/11). The William Kisinger directed ensemble will perform at 7 p.m. at Slayter Center of Performing Arts. Admission is free. Each summer, Kisinger invites community musicians, Purdue faculty and staff members and their spouses to join students in unique musical experiences. During the month the band rehearses together, they work up music pulled from several different centuries and many different genres. John Phillip Sousa's lively "The Corcoran Cadets March" kicks off the Slayter concert, which serves as the finale to the Band-sponsored summer program. This program is available to interested community musicians who wish to participate or to students who wish to enroll in the course for academic credits. It involves twice-weekly rehearsals leading up to this concert. Music lovers also will find Richard Stauss' "Zueignung" and Leroy Anderson's "Blue Tango" on the program, along with a Lerner and Lowe medley of songs from such Broadway hits as "My Fair Lady." A new composition by James Curnow, "Where Never Lark Or Eagle Flew," which proved to be an instant hit with crowds during the regular Purdue concert band season, will be reprised.
