Appointments and promotions

– Bruce Haumesser has accepted an appointment as executive chef of the Purdue Memorial Union. Haumesser has 11 years experience as an executive chef or food and beverage director for prominent hotel operations including Omni International Hotels and Interstate Hotel Corp., which operates Marriott facilities in several states. He is an honors graduate of the Culinary Institute of America.

Faculty and staff honors

– Maribeth Cassidy Schmitt, associate professor in the School of Education and director of the Indiana Reading Recovery Program, has been elected to the presidential line of the Reading Recovery Council of North America. She will serve one year as vice president, one as president-elect, and then will become president in 2002. The program is an organization of 11,500 educators and interested individuals whose mission is to ensure access to Reading Recovery for every child who needs support. In addition to serving on the board for the last four years, Schmitt also is the editor of the council's journal, "Literacy Teaching and Learning: An International Journal of Early Reading and Writing."
