Lugar to address agriculture issues during farm tour

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar will address farm issues during a public meeting Wednesday (7/5) at Harrison High School. Lugar's visit is part of the Indiana Farm Management Tour, sponsored by the Indiana Farm Management Association, the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service and the university's Department of Agricultural Economics.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with Lugar scheduled to speak at 7 p.m. Harrison High School is located at 5701 N. County Road 50W, West Lafayette.

Lugar will discuss risk management and agricultural policy. The senior Indiana senator is chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. He authored the Agricultural Research Extension Act, signed into law by President Clinton, which funds future research in agriculture and food systems.

The four-term Republican manages his family's 604-acre Marion County corn, soybean and tree farm. Lugar's family also operates a food machinery manufacturing business in Indianapolis.

The Indiana Farm Management Tour annually showcases top-performing farms across the state. This year's tour, set for July 5 and 6, includes: the Wise-Huffman Farm, 3914 N. County Road 800E, Tippecanoe County; Walter Kelley & Son Farm, 3367 W. County Road 1150S, White County; Harper Brothers Farm, 6073 N. County Road 300E, Jasper County; Kingma Family Farms, 8901 W. County Road 1000N, Jasper County; and Fair Oaks Dairy, 5431 E. County Road 600N, Newton County.

There is no admission charge for tour events, but free tickets are required for the lunch at Kingma Family Farms and the Fair Oaks Dairy tour. Tickets may be picked up at prior tour stops.
