Six students named Extension assistant educators

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Six Indiana college students have been selected to participate in the Purdue University Extension Assistant Educator summer internship program.

College seniors and graduate students are eligible to apply for the program. Those taking part in the internship and the counties they are serving in are Purdue students Amy Stenger, Shelby County; Joan Grott, Laporte County; Bethany Moseley, Boone County; Ann Vidt, Lake County; and Jessica Dykstra, Warren County. Angela Rosenberger, a Ball State University student, will serve in Delaware County

Assistant educators perform duties such as program planning, coordinating volunteers, organizing workshops and activities, and assisting with the media. Students are reimbursed by their counties for mileage and miscellaneous work.

This year is the first time the program has taken place since 1982. It began as an opportunity for college students who plan to enter the Extension field to get a more in-depth view of an educator's career. To be considered for the position, students must have an interest in Extension as a career, a good academic record, be interested in one of the program areas and have related background experience in Extension or 4-H.

Floyd Branson, assistant director for the program, said the internship is very career-oriented and in-depth.

"One of the main goals of this program is to see how these students perform under the gun. It is not only for them to decide whether or not they would like to pursue Extension as a career but it is also for educators to see how well they are suited for it," he said.

Branson also believes that this program adds a little excitement and youth to the Extension Service. "These students are a motivation to a lot of the permanent Extension staff as well as to 4-H and Extension youth. They are seen as role models for young children," he said.
