Purdue School of Education receives federal grant

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University's School of Education will receive $1.11 million from the Prepare Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology (PT3) federal grants program, President Clinton announced June 3.

The grant is a 50/50 match with the university, with the Purdue Office of Academic Affairs and other university offices contributing the same amount to the project.

This grant, which will be administered during the next three years, will enable Purdue to continue implementation of its long-term project to make all future teachers technology proficient. Following five years of study, the Purdue project began in the fall of 1999, with the first class of technology-proficient teachers slated for graduation in the spring of 2002.

The program will allow education students to create a multimedia electronic portfolio, in addition to the traditional paper-based one. It will also prepare Purdue faculty in education, science and liberal arts to teach technology to pre-service teachers, and enable greater technological communication between Purdue and its partner-in-teaching school districts: Crawfordsville Community School Corp., Crawfordsville ; Lafayette School Corp., Lafayette ; Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, Indianapolis ; and School City of East Chicago, East Chicago .
