JOURNALISTS: Here's a story idea and a cancellation of a Purdue event during the next two weeks.
Purdue's Boeing 737 serves FAA, flies homeA Purdue University-owned, former commercial aircraft will return to the West Lafayette campus on June 19, having served the Federal Aviation Administration and The Boeing Co. in their quest to determine whether to redesign rudder systems on Boeing 737s.Last September, United Airlines donated the Boeing 737-200 to Purdue's Department of Aviation Technology to be used as a life-sized learning lab for the 600 students in three aviation-related majors. One month later, Purdue loaned the jetliner to the FAA and Boeing for flight tests, and a sophisticated computer analysis was used to model the mechanics and aerodynamics of the plane's rudder system. Following the landing of the Boeing 737 at the Purdue Airport between 3 p.m. and 4 p. m., Mike Kroes, head of Purdue's Department of Aviation Technology, and Boeing spokesman Alan Bailey will be available to answer media questions regarding tests that were conducted on the plane. On the day of the event, journalists interested in covering the landing should call Doug Latia, aviation technology building deputy, (765) 494-9958, to confirm a specific landing time. Journalists should go to the ramp located just east of the main terminal building, where a Purdue representative will escort them onto the tarmac.
