Weed Day spotlights weed control strategies, products
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Farmers growing corn and soybeans don't want to produce a crop
of weeds, too. At Purdue University's annual Weed Day, they'll learn how to keep
fields clear of the unsightly, harmful intruders.
Weed Day will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon June 27 at Purdue's Agronomy Research
Center, located seven miles northwest of campus on U.S. 52. The event is free and
coffee and doughnuts will be served.
According to Tom Bauman, professor of botany and plant pathology, Weed Day showcases
the latest weed-fighting strategies and products.
"What we'll look at is weed control, crop injury and the economics of weed management
systems," Bauman said.
Trial plots are a highlight of every Weed Day. Some 20 herbicide manufacturers will
put their products up against their competitors in actual field conditions. About
40 acres of corn and soybeans are devoted to these row-by-row trials.
"This is a good place for comparing the standards of different products," said Mike
White, weed science research associate at Purdue. White added that several experimental
corn herbicides and genetically enhanced crop varieties also will be on display.
Shuttle buses will run Weed Day visitors from the research center parking area to
the trial plots and back. The event will go on rain or shine, Bauman said.
There is no charge for the event, but those interested in attending are asked to pre-register
by calling Anita Eberle at (765) 494-9871.
