Purdue commencement to be heard in live Webcast

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The second of four commencement ceremonies at Purdue University this weekend will be broadcast live on the Internet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday (5/13).

The live audio Webcast is Purdue's prize as one of nine winners among U.S. colleges and universities that received the most online votes as a favorite college or university in the first Commencement Cup Challenge sponsored by Eddie Bauer Inc. and powered by Yahoo! Careers. Contest voting was held from April 7 to May 1.

The top three vote-getters won gold awards – a live video Webcast.

The next three winners, including Purdue, won silver awards – a live audio Webcast and an archive video version of commencement.

Three bronze winners will be able to provide archive videos of their commencements.

"The Purdue community is very proud of our traditional and stately commencement ceremonies on all our campuses throughout the year," said Joseph L. Bennett, Purdue vice president for university relations. "To share one of our spring ceremonies with a global audience is very exciting. Our thanks to those who gave Purdue their vote."

The four Purdue ceremonies, held tonight (5/12) through Sunday morning (5/14), mark the university's 180th commencement on the West Lafayette campus. Approximately 4,900 students – 3,840 of whom are undergraduates – will earn degrees during the ceremonies.

Purdue President Steven C. Beering and Thomas J. Carroll, president of the Purdue Alumni Association, will address graduates at each ceremony in Edward C. Elliott Hall of Music. The West Lafayette ceremonies also will spotlight 17 of the 22 honorary degree recipients being honored at Purdue commencement ceremonies around the state this month.
