Purdue awarding degrees during ceremonies across state

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University will award degrees at five campuses and six Statewide Technology sites around the state during commencement ceremonies in May.

Ceremonies are scheduled at the West Lafayette campus May 12-14. Approximately 4,900 students -- 3,840 of whom are undergraduates -- will earn degrees during four ceremonies.

Purdue President Steven C. Beering and Thomas J. Carroll, president of the Purdue Alumni Association, will address graduates at each ceremony in Edward C. Elliott Hall of Music. The commencement ceremonies will feature two large video screens above the Hall of Music stage. The screens will display a close-up photo of each graduate as he or she is congratulated by the dean, just after receiving the diploma.

Tickets are required for admission to the hall; participants are issued tickets for family and friends.

Each ceremony will be for specific schools. The schedule is:

8 p.m. Friday, May 12: Schools of Engineering and Education. Class response by Diane M. Whirledge, Goshen , Ind ., who majored in engineering.

9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 13: Schools of Agriculture, Consumer and Family Sciences, Science, and Veterinary Medicine. Class response by Luke M. Jacobus, Columbus , Ind ., a School of Agriculture graduate.

2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13: Schools of Liberal Arts and Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences. Class response by Shandol C. Swalley, Greencastle , Ind ., a liberal arts student.

9:30 a.m. Sunday, May 14: Schools of Management and Technology. Class response by Chad D. Kerkhof, Greenfield , Ind ., from the School of Technology.

Undergraduate totals, by schools, are:

Agriculture -- 310

Consumer and Family Sciences -- 260

Education -- 140

Engineering -- 665

Liberal Arts -- 690

Management -- 330

Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences -- 190

Science -- 310

Technology -- 945

The other degree candidates on the West Lafayette campus include approximately 900 students from the Graduate School and 160 professional-degree candidates -- 65 from the School of Veterinary Medicine and 95 from the School of Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences.

Commencement videos for each school will be available to new graduates, their families and friends, said Steve Hall, director of the Hall of Music. The video costs $25 plus $5 postage and handling. Order forms are available at Purdue box offices and will be available from hall ushers and with programs during the commencement exercises. The Hall of Music box office will be open just before and after each commencement ceremony to accept order forms.

Commencement times and locations at other Purdue campuses are:

  • Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis : 3 p.m. Sunday, May 14, at the RCA Dome.

  • Purdue North Central: 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, at the Valparaiso University Chapel and noon Wednesday, May 17, at the Westville Correctional Facility.

  • Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne : 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at the Memorial Coliseum and Exposition Center.

  • Purdue Calumet: 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at the Star Plaza Theatre, Merrillville .

Statewide Technology commencements will be:

Anderson -Muncie : 3 p.m. Saturday, May 6, Warner Auditorium, Anderson University.

Columbus and Southeastern Indiana (Versailles ): 7 p.m. Sunday, May 14, Columbus Holiday Inn.

Kokomo : 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, Kelley Center, Indiana University, Kokomo.

New Albany : 7 p.m. Monday, May 8, Amphitheater, Indiana University-Southeast.

Richmond : 6 p.m. Friday, May 12, Richmond High School.

South Bend -Elkhart : 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 9, Joyce Center, University of Notre Dame.
