Purdue unveils alcohol awareness Web siteWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University has unveiled a new Web site that provides information to help prevent alcohol abuse. The site, includes information about Grand Alternative, a series of student-organized, alcohol-free activities scheduled in conjunction with the Purdue Grand Prix this weekend. It also offers links to state and national resources and information, including state laws and university regulations. L. Tony Hawkins, dean of students, said the Web site is one of several responses the university is taking against alcohol abuse. "We are trying to do a variety of things to attack this problem," Hawkins said. "The most effective measures are those that involve the students. We are providing increased education about alcohol abuse and are fighting the myths that almost all students use alcohol and binge drink. We are focusing also on treatment, accountability and alternative activities." Several university administrators formed an ad hoc committee in May 1998 after a large party resulted in disciplinary action against four fraternities for alcohol-related offenses. The committee consists of administrators from student services, student housing, university relations and physical facilities. The Purdue Office of Publications built and developed the site. "The site will help parents and college students make responsible choices about alcohol, but it also is a good resource for anyone concerned with the problem at the high-school or middle-school level," said David Brannan, director of the Office of Publications.
