This calendar lists selected Purdue events during the next four weeks. Events are free and open to the public, except where noted, and all are open to news media coverage. New or updated listings have two asterisks (**). All events in this calendar, plus many others, are listed in Purdue's online calendar.

Updated travel directions around road construction zones near campus are available on the Web.

EVENTS

• Monday-Tuesday, April 24-25.  Grand Prix qualifications. 5:30 p.m. Kart track near Ross-Ade Stadium.

• Friday, April 28. Ford Grand Prix Day. 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Memorial Mall.

** • Friday, April 28.  Grand Slam Battle of the Bands. 5:30 p.m. Front lawn of Purdue Memorial Union. The six bands competing are No Reason Given, Allison Wonderland, Dr. Scerri's Smokin' Sunset Band, The Slizzerd Kings, Flyin' LeRoys, and Groove Hop. There also will be games such as potato sack races, three-legged races, bean bag toss, ring toss, hula hoops, a watermelon-eating contest, and Twister. Part of the Grand Alternative event series. Sponsored by Purdue Student Government and Purdue Student Union Board.

• Friday-Sunday, April 28-30.  Gala Week. The Purdue Alumni Association has planned reunions, entertainment and activities for alumni who return for the university's annual Gala Week celebration. A complete schedule is online, or contact the association at (765) 494-5175 or paa@paa.purdue.edu.

• Saturday, April 29.  Paul Spotts Emrick Reunion Luncheon and Bust Dedication. Luncheon. 11:30 a.m. Anniversary Drawing Room, Purdue Memorial Union. Dedication of Emrick Bust, 1 p.m., Bands Plaza rear of Elliott Hall of Music.

** • Saturday, April 29.  Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff Academic and Service Awards Program. 1 p.m. Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. The Black Caucus and the Purdue Black Alumni Organization will recognize nearly 200 African-American undergraduate students for their academic achievements.

** • Saturday, April 29.  Grand Prix go-kart race. 3 p.m. Grand Prix Track north of Ross-Ade Stadium. Track opens at 10 a.m. First qualifying sprint starts at 11:30 a.m. Fifty-mile feature race starts about 3 p.m. Bed race will begin at 1:45 p.m. Tickets cost $5 in advance and $6 at the gate. Grand Prix Foundation members are selling advance tickets in Room G2, Stewart Center. The foundation also will receive a portion of the concession sales from the football team's Gold and Black scrimmage at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Ross-Ade Stadium.

• Saturday, May 6.  Anderson-Muncie Statewide Technology Commencement. 3 p.m. Warner Auditorium, Anderson University.

• Monday, May 8.  New Albany Statewide Technology Commencement. 7 p.m. IU Southeast Amphitheatre.

• Tuesday, May 9.  Kokomo Statewide Technology Commencement. 1:30 p.m. Kelly Center, IU-Kokomo.

• Tuesday, May 9.  South Bend-Elkhart Statewide Technology Commencement. 7 p.m. Joyce Center, University of Notre Dame.

• Tuesday, May 9.  Purdue North Central Commencement. 7:30 p.m. Valparaiso University Chapel.

• Wednesday, May 10.  Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Commencement. 7 p.m. Fort Wayne Memorial Coliseum.

• Thursday, May 11.  Southeastern Indiana Statewide Technology Commencement. 7 p.m. South Ripley Elementary School.

• Friday, May 12.  Richmond Statewide Technology Commencement. 6 p.m. Richmond High School.

• Friday-Sunday, May 12-14.  Spring Commencement. Elliott Hall of Music. Tickets, issued free to all candidates for degrees, are necessary for admission. The schedule:
8 p.m. Friday: School of Education and Schools of Engineering.
9:30 a.m. Saturday: Schools of Agriculture, Consumer and Family Sciences, Science, and Veterinary Medicine.
2:30 p.m. Saturday: School of Liberal Arts and School of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences.
9:30 a.m. Sunday: School of Management and School of Technology.

• Sunday, May 14.  Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Commencement. 3 p.m. RCA Dome.

• Sunday, May 14.  Columbus Statewide Technology Commencement. 7 p.m. Columbus Holiday Inn.

** • Wednesday, May 17.  Purdue North Central Commencement. Noon. Westville Correctional Center. Graduation ceremonies for students who are inmates at the correctional center.

** • Sunday, May 21.  Purdue Calumet Commencement 1:30 p.m. Star Plaza Theatre, Merrillville.

ENTERTAINMENT

• Thursday, April 27.  Purdue Bands' Applied Music Recital. 7 p.m. Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. Free.

• Friday, April 28.  Purdue Bands Twilight Concert Series – Jazz on the Hill featuring Purdue Jazz Bands and a choral jazz component from Purdue Musical Organizations. 5 p.m. Slayter Center of Performing Arts. Free.

• Sunday, April 30.  Purdue Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Band free concert. 2:30 p.m. Long Center for the Performing Arts, 111 N. Sixth St., Lafayette. Purdue Bands' Concerto Competition winner Abraham Huang performs Mendelssohn's "Violin Concerto in E Minor" with the Purdue Symphony Orchestra.

** • Saturday, May 13.  PMO Varsity Glee Club End-of-Season Concert. 8:30 p.m. Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center. Tickets are $10 for public, $8 for students, at the Loeb Box Office or by calling (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.

** • Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20.  Staged reading of an original play, "The Creature," written by Richard Thomas, Purdue associate professor of theater. 8 p.m. Experimental Theatre, Stewart Center. Presented by Purdue Theatre, Elliott Hall of Music Productions and the Department of Computer Graphics Technology. LECTURES

• Monday, May 1. Diversity Dialogues. Noon-1 p.m. Room B2, Stone Hall. The series, co-sponsored by the Purdue Bahai Club and the Purdue Diversity Resource Office, features guided discussions between two people with a specific thing in common and a specific difference. Today: a younger and an older African-American.

CONFERENCES

** • Friday, May 12.  Weight-y Issues: Obesity and Body Image – Practical Discussions. 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Room 218, Stewart Center. A one-day conference on obesity and other weight-related issues sponsored by the Department of Foods and Nutrition. Registration is $75 and includes lunch and all supporting materials.
