Faculty, staff recognized at honors convocation

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Outstanding teaching at Purdue during the 1999-2000 academic year was recognized Friday (4/14) at the University Honors Convocation.

The annual awards ceremony in Elliott Hall of Music honors outstanding faculty members universitywide and in each of the undergraduate schools. Additionally, Dean's List or Semester Honors students from the 1999 spring and fall semesters were recognized, as were winners of year-end student and staff awards.

Five faculty members received Purdue University Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Awards in Memory of Charles B. Murphy. Each $5,000 award – the university's highest undergraduate teaching honor – is given for exemplary teaching performance in all phases of undergraduate instruction on Purdue's West Lafayette campus. The 2000 winners are:

• David J. Asai, professor of biological sciences.

• John G. Graveel, professor of agronomy.

• Jonathan M. Harbor, associate professor of earth and atmospheric sciences.

• Joseph M. La Lopa, assistant professor of restaurant, hotel, institutional and tourism management.

• Robert W. Sovinski, associate professor of landscape architecture.

Academic school teaching awards and the recipients are:

• School of Agriculture Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award – Graveel.

• Mary L. Matthews Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching in the School of Consumer and Family Sciences – Olivia B. Wood, associate professor of foods and nutrition.

• School of Education Outstanding Teacher Award – George A. Kamberelis, associate professor of curriculum and instruction.

• A.A. Potter Best of Engineering Teachers Award – C. Douglas Sutton, associate professor of civil engineering.

• School of Liberal Arts Educational Excellence Awards – James S. Nairne, professor of psychological sciences, and Irwin H. Weiser, professor of English.

• School of Management Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher Award – Susan G. Watts, assistant professor of management.

• School of Pharmacy and Pharmacal Sciences Professor Henry W. Heine Award for Excellence in Teaching – David J. Riese, assistant professor of medicinal chemistry and molecular pharmacology.

• School of Health Sciences Award for Excellence in Teaching – Gary P. Carlson, professor of toxicology and associate head of the school.

• Excellence in Teaching Award in the School of Nursing – Donna N. Schmeiser, clinical assistant professor of nursing.

• School of Science Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award – Justin J. Price, professor of mathematics.

• School of Technology James G. Dwyer Award for Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching – Christine L. Corum, assistant professor of mechanical engineering technology.

• School of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award – Karin M. Kooreman, assistant professor of veterinary anatomy.

Other faculty award recipients are:

• Mary Louise Foster, academic adviser in the Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing, who won the Helen B. Schleman Gold Medallion Award, which includes a $1,000 cash prize and medal. The award is for significant contributions to women students at the university.

• Nikolaos A. Peppas, the Showalter Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Engineering, who was named the 2000 winner of the $3,000 Herbert Newby McCoy Award for contributions to the field of science for his research on therapeutic formulations for protein and drug delivery.

• Sovinski, who won the Class of 1922 Helping Students Learn Award for his development of an online professional office simulation exercise for his Professional Practice of Landscape Architecture class. He received a $3,750 cash prize, and his department will receive a $1,250 academic expense account for his use. At the Purdue Alumni Association's Founders Day Banquet on Saturday, April 29, he will receive the Helping Students Learn Award crystal trophy.

• Cynthia Stohl, the Margaret Church Distinguished Professor of Communication and head of the Department of Communication, who accepted the new Award for Excellence in Distance Education, Best Credit-Granting Program, as project director for a collaborative learning project in graduate-level communication courses. She received $1,000 and certificates for herself and team members from the universities of Illinois, Southern California and California at Santa Barbara.

• LaDon Swann, Extension aquaculture specialist in the Department of Animal Sciences, who accepted the new Award for Excellence in Distance Education, Best Noncredit Program, as project director for a CD-ROM initiative, "Getting Started in Freshwater Aquaculture." He will share a $1,000 award and certificates with team members from the Purdue Agricultural Communication Service: Jane W. Brown, coordinator, educational media; Sharon C. Katz, technical illustrator/visual designer; and Russell J. Merzdorf, visual designer.
