Purdue seniors earn leadership awards

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Nine Purdue University students received Charles O. McGaughey (mick GOY) Leadership Awards today (Friday, 4/14) during the University Honors Convocation.

Each student earned an unrestricted cash award of $2,600. The recipients are Kristy Alicia Kim Schulhof, a junior from Indianapolis, and seniors Caroline Campbell of Lincoln, Neb.; Gregory Henkle of Greenwood, Ind.; Lisa Kelley of Sun Prairie, Wis.; Andrea Livesay of Seymour, Ind.; Nathan Rasmussen of Valparaiso, Ind.; Beth Richardson of Huntertown, Ind.; Stephanie Scherer of Haubstadt, Ind.; and Shandol Swalley of Greencastle, Ind.

McGaughey, a 1939 Purdue graduate from Indianapolis, established the award to honor undergraduates who show leadership abilities and an appreciation of basic American values through service to the community and the university. The first awards were presented in 1991. McGaughey, who co-founded the Indiana-based MCL Cafeteria chain, died in 1992.

Recipients must have completed at least two years of study at Purdue while maintaining a B average and have an appreciation of the values of liberty, the democratic form of government, and the importance of respect for others and for the diversity of the United States.

Here are details about the winners:

• Campbell is majoring in management and minoring in marketing and management information systems. She has been a leader in several student organizations, including Mortar Board national honor society, Delta Delta Delta social sorority, Old Master Central Committee and the School of Management Council. She has been involved with Junior Achievement and has been a volunteer with the Salvation Army and the Read With Me program.

• Henkle is majoring in chemistry and minoring in psychology. He worked closely with Camp Calcium, a research project in the Department of Foods and Nutrition. He has been an officer in Delta Upsilon social fraternity and Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership honor society. He has been a volunteer with Lafayette Urban Ministry's after-school program, St. Elizabeth Medical Center and the Read With Me program.

• Kelley is majoring in elementary education with minors in kindergarten education and reading. She has taken a leadership role in Zeta Tau Alpha social sorority, the Panhellenic Association and Mortar Board. She went to Australia during her junior year as part of the Purdue Study Abroad Program. She founded the Read With Me Program in 1998 and volunteered her services to the West Lafayette High School girls basketball team.

• Livesay is majoring in management. She is a leader in the Accounting Association, Beta Alpha Psi national accounting honorary, and Beta Gamma Sigma management honorary. She has served as a volunteer with the Kossuth Street Baptist Church, March of Dimes, Harvest Bible Study and Mount View Missionary Baptist Church Sunday School.

• Rasmussen is majoring in management and minoring in marketing and international business. He has held leadership roles in Management Ambassadors, Purdue Marketing Association and the Undergraduate Studies Program Ambassadors. He has been an intern at Centier Bank and volunteered with St. Elizabeth Medical Center, the American Red Cross, Trinity Lutheran Church and the March of Dimes.

• Richardson is majoring in sociology and minoring in psychology, religious studies and organizational leadership and supervision. She has been a team leader in Campus Crusade for Christ and has been counselor in Windsor Residence Hall. She has been a volunteer with St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Kossuth Street Baptist Church and the American Red Cross.

• Scherer is majoring in computer science and mathematics. She is the founder and chairwoman of the Computer Science Undergraduate Student Board. She has been active in Engineering Projects in Community Service, the Women in Science Program and the Computer Science Women's Network. In the community, she has been a volunteer for the Greater Lafayette Convention and Visitors Bureau.

• Schulhof is majoring in biology in the pre-medicine program. She held leadership roles in the Purdue Foundation Student Board, Kappa Kappa Gamma social sorority and Faskillitators. She also is involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Second Presbyterian Church and Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis.

• Swalley is majoring in psychology and movement and sports science and minoring in history. She has been active in Boiler Gold Rush, a first-year student orientation program, serving as a director and tour guide. She also has been involved in the women's water polo team and Mortar Board honor society. In the community, she has been a volunteer at Gobin United Methodist Church, Habitat for Humanity, Food Finders, the Salvation Army and the March of Dimes.
