Haas Award winner to be recognized April 20

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Leah H. Jamieson, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will be recognized as the 2000 Violet Haas Award winner during an open reception at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in the Krannert Drawing Room.

Purdue's Council on the Status of Women uses the awards to recognize an individual, department or program for demonstrated efforts in promoting the advancement of women in the university. The award was established in 1990 to honor Haas, a faculty member in Purdue's School of Electrical Engineering from 1962 until her death in 1986, who promoted women's issues and provided a positive role model for the university's faculty, staff and students.

Jamieson is being recognized for her impact on the advancement of women both nationally and at Purdue. She has been active in women's issues at the national level through testimony presented to Congress and through various activities tied to national organizations, published articles, talks, panels and mentoring.

She is co-founder of the nationally award-winning EPICS program – Engineering Projects in Community Service – which works in part to increase the number of women and minorities in engineering. She also has served as a facilitator or moderator for workshops at Purdue as well as at the University of Illinois and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology aimed at fostering a climate of gender equity in the classroom.

Last year, Jamieson and four Purdue colleagues forged a partnership with the Institute for Women and Technology. This led to two workshops that engaged more than 70 women from Purdue and the Greater Lafayette community in discussions about technology. She is now overseeing work at Purdue to pursue design ideas from the workshops for new products that focus on women and family.
