Purdue's first black engineering grad honored

Purdue's School of Civil Engineering will unveil a plaque on Saturday, April 29, honoring the university's first African-American engineering graduate. David Robert Lewis earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1894. The bronze plaque, crafted by sculptor Ed Hamilton, will be unveiled at 10:15 a.m. in the main lobby of the Civil Engineering Building. The dedication is being held in conjunction with the civil engineering school's annual alumni breakfast. • Monday, April 17.  Reading by award-winning novelist Jane Hamilton, author of "The Book of Ruth" and "Map of the World." 7:30 p.m. Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. Hamilton also will engage in an informal discussion at noon Tuesday, April 18, at the Undergraduate Library Bookstall. Sponsored by the Department of English. • April 29 ceremony will honor Purdue's first black engineering grad "Best Bets" also has details about two appearances by award-winning novelist Jane Hamilton; the presentation of awards April 24 in the Soybean Utilization Contest; Gala Week April 28-30; a Gala Celebration of Nursing April 28; the Grand Prix go-kart race, with Johnny Rutherford as grand marshal, on April 29; and an induction ceremony April 19 for the Purdue chapter of Phi Beta Delta.

• Monday April 24.  Soybean Utilization Contest awards program. Purdue student teams will receive awards for innovative products they created using soybeans. 10:30 a.m. Something Different restaurant, 4939 E. 82nd St. on the north side of Indianapolis. • Friday-Sunday, April 28-30.  Gala Week. The Purdue Alumni Association has planned reunions, entertainment and activities for alumni who return for the university's annual Gala Week celebration. Contact: Purdue Alumni Association, paa@paa.purdue.edu, (765) 494-5175.

• Friday, April 28.  The Purdue School of Nursing's second annual Gala Celebration of Nursing will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the University Inn in West Lafayette. Events include a presentation at 9 a.m. by Jane Rothrock, a nationally known author and speaker, on "Staying Sane in the Fast Lane." There also will be a presentation at 12:30 p.m. by Lafayette native Leslie Mahara Gibson about humor in health care. • Saturday, April 29.  The Grand Prix go-kart race, known as "The Greatest Spectacle in College Racing," will begin about 3 p.m. at the Grand Prix Track north of Ross-Ade Stadium. Track opens at 10 a.m. First qualifying sprint starts at 11:30 a.m. A parade led by three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Johnny Rutherford will leave the parking lot south of Ross-Ade Stadium at 1:45 p.m. and travel north to the kart track. Journalists who plan to cover the race can get credentials at a media tent that will be set up south of the track before the race.
