Kick back, picnic and enjoy music at Twilight Concerts

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Bands surrounds Easter weekend with four free outdoor concerts to celebrate spring and take advantage of pleasant weather and lengthening days.

Three Twilight Concerts will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, April 17-19, at Slayter Center of Performing Arts, Intramural Drive and Stadium Avenue, in advance of the holiday weekend.

On Monday, April 17, the kickoff concert by Varsity Band will reprise "Dinosaurs," a tune by Daniel Bukvich that proved to be a crowd favorite at a recent Long Center concert. A variety of unusual instruments – ranging from six-foot PVC-pipe stomping tubes to drums filled with marbles to singing water glasses – mix with traditional instruments to portray everything from triceratops to Tyrannosaurus rex. Pamela Nave directs the Varsity Band for the concert.

On Tuesday, April 18, it's Collegiate Band's turn, and the William Kisinger-directed ensemble will present a concert of traditional band music.

On Wednesday, April 19, fireworks will shoot through the evening sky as David Leppla's University Concert band continues the tradition of drawing the Twilight series to a close with a performance of Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture."

In the week following Easter, Purdue Bands' outdoor series of concerts switches gears from concert band music to jazz. The Purdue Jazz Band, Lab Jazz Band and Concert Jazz Band each will get a showcase in Jazz on the Hill, set for 5 p.m. Friday, April 28, at Slayter Center.

Admission to all the concerts is free. Programming is family-oriented, and those attending are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs and food to picnic on the hill in front of the band shell.
