Trustees OK Union Club renovation project,
10-year capital plan

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University Board of Trustees today (Friday, 4/7) authorized a contract for the renovation of a portion of the Purdue Memorial Union Club and approved a 10-year capital improvement plan for future construction.

Mid-States General and Mechanical Contracting Corp. of Lafayette will handle the $9.5 million refurbishment of the north wing of the Union Club hotel, which was built in 1953. The contract, which still requires Indiana State Budget Agency approval, calls for a complete upgrade of the heating and air conditioning systems, electrical and plumbing systems, elevators, windows, and fire detection equipment. A new coin-operated laundry and exercise facility will be added for guests, and a new service elevator will be installed.

"The renovation will bring this wing of the Union Club more in line with the kind of accommodations one expects to find on the campus of a world-class university," said Wayne Kjonaas, vice president for physical facilities.

The renovation is expected to get under way immediately after May commencement exercises. The north wing will reopen in January 2002. Accommodations will continue to be available in the south wing of the Union Club, and in 90 specially refurbished rooms in Young Graduate House, for the duration of the project

The 10-year capital improvement plan will be submitted to the Indiana General Assembly before the start of the 2001 legislative session, during which lawmakers will set the two-year state budget. The plan calls for state funding for several projects in the next three years:

• Engineering building and chiller plant, $57 million.

• Computer sciences building phase I, $13 million (plus $7 million in gift funds).

• Equipment and furnishings for the new Visual and Performing Arts Center, $3.5 million.

• Boiler life-extension and utilities system expansion, $2.6 million.

• Swine facility, $5 million (plus $2 million in endowment earnings).

The following capital projects will be funded through gift funds and other sources of income:

• Ross-Ade Stadium renovation, $55 million.

• Krannert School of Management addition, $38.5 million.

• Nanoscale technology center, $37 million.

• Chemical Engineering Building addition, $15 million.

• Engineering research facility, $15 million.

• Entomology Hall renovation and expansion, $12 million.

• Forestry and natural resources facility, $10 million.

• Construction technology building, $3.5 million.

The capital improvement plan also includes a $30 million request for state funding for phase I of a new life sciences research facility to be built during the 2003-2005 biennium.

In other business, the trustees approved a new associate of science degree program in chemistry to be offered at the Indianapolis and Columbus campuses of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. The board also approved a new bachelor of science degree program in computer graphics technology at IUPUI. Both program proposals will now be sent to the Indiana State Commission for Higher Education for final review.
