March 31, 2000 Vet school open house has something for everyoneWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Students considering a career in veterinary medicine, people who love animals, and even Purdue football fans will find lots to see and do at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine Open House from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at Lynn Hall on the West Lafayette campus. The day begins with a chance to meet Purdue head football coach Joe Tiller and his dog, Millie, from 9 to 10 a.m. An oxen-pulled hayride will transport visitors to a petting zoo for children, and there will be demonstrations by leader dogs for the blind, search and rescue dogs, and the Tippecanoe County Sheriff Department's canine unit. Among the displays will be information on CHAPS, a therapeutic horseback-riding program for handicapped children, retired greyhound adoption information, and Pet Safe, a program that secures temporary foster homes for animals when families are in crisis. Presentations will be held throughout the day on admission to the vet school, careers in veterinary technology, and common pet problems both medical and behavioral. This is the 47th year for the event, which is organized and operated entirely by students. The open house is part of Springfest on April 15 and 16, which includes Bug Bowl, the 87th annual Horticulture Show, and scores of other activities featuring departments from the Schools of Agriculture, Consumer and Family Sciences, Science, and Veterinary Medicine. The Purdue Student Union Board also celebrates Mothers Weekend with an Arts and Crafts Show that will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 15, in the ballrooms and first-floor lounges of the Purdue Memorial Union. Nearly 60 exhibitors have made plans to show and sell their work. CONTACT: Frank Ridgley, (765) 743-8446, fridgely@vet.vet.purdue.edu
