Researcher seeks hearing aid users for speech study

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A Purdue University professor studying the effect of age-related hearing loss and hearing aids on speech perception is seeking volunteers for a study that could produce new training techniques for hearing aid users.

"For most hearing-impaired people, hearing aids do not 'correct' hearing loss like glasses correct vision impairment,'" explained Amy Neel, assistant professor of audio and speech sciences. "One of the frustrations reported by many hearing aid users is that it is still difficult for them to understand speech in noisy situations. Individual users also differ widely in how much benefit they receive from the devices even when they have similar hearing losses."

Neel's study will look at changes in the understanding of speech sounds by both new and experienced hearing aid users. Volunteers should be native speakers of American English with sloping, high-frequency, sensorineural hearing loss related to age or noise exposure. They will be asked to participate in one to three research sessions both with and without their hearing aids. The sessions will last 60 to 90 minutes, and participants will receive free parking on campus and $10 per hour for their time.

For more information, contact Neel at (765) 494-3796, or atneel@purdue.edu.
