Purdue sciences highly ranked in U.S. News survey

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – U.S. News and World Report ranks Purdue University's graduate program in analytical chemistry as tops in the nation in a survey released today (Friday, 3/31). In the specialty area of mathematical statistics, Purdue tied with Cornell for seventh place nationally.

Overall, chemistry at Purdue ranked 18th among the nation's graduate schools, computer science was 17th (a tie with Harvard, Rice and Yale) and mathematics 25th (a tie with Duke, Johns Hopkins, Rice and the University of Washington).

"All of the graduate programs in the School of Science strive for excellence," said Michael Forman, associate dean of that school. "We work very hard to provide the best possible graduate education and support for our graduate colleagues and at the same time be sensitive to the needs graduate students are facing at this time.

"For example, there is currently a national concern about the extended time it takes to earn a Ph.D. degree. In fact, we have been addressing this issue. We are committed to delivering the best graduate education possible without prolonging the time to the Ph.D. degree."

U.S. News compiled its rankings from responses by faculty and administrators in the given disciplines.

The magazine will publish its complete rankings of graduate schools in its April 10 issue, "America's Best Graduate Schools," available on newsstands Monday (4/3). The complete rankings and methodology will also be available at U.S. News Online.

U.S. News has published graduate school rankings annually since 1987.
