PMO/Rotary Club benefit concert will help restore Long Center

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Musical Organizations has teamed up with the Lafayette Rotary Club to present "Singing for Greater Lafayette: A Celebration of Community to Benefit the Restoration of the Long Center for the Performing Arts" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8.

All proceeds from the benefit concert at the Long Center, 111 N. Sixth St., Lafayette, will go toward the restoration of the historic structure. While most of the work has been completed, there still are two major jobs to be finished – restoration of the stage floor and re-rigging and upgrading of the stage lighting.

Concert tickets are $50, $30 and $10, available at the Long Center box office or by calling (765) 742-5664. The amount of any ticket purchase exceeding $10 is tax deductible.

"The Lafayette Rotary Club's 50-year relationship with the Purdue Varsity Glee Club prompted both groups to expand their relationship, include the rest of Purdue Musical Organizations, and work together on a community service project," said Jim Hanks, Lafayette Rotary Club chairman of "Singing for Greater Lafayette." "This collaboration spawned the upcoming charity benefit concert, with plans to present similar concerts each year for a different worthy cause."

Brian Breed, director of PMO, said: "Because we regularly perform at the Long Center, we knew about their restoration efforts and wanted to help finish their project. And by doing this type of philanthropic service on an annual basis, our PMO singers have the opportunity to give back to the community."

The show will features the student members of these PMO ensembles: the Varsity Glee Club, Purduettes, University Choir, PMO Express and Purdue Bell Choir. A select children's choir from Greater Lafayette also will perform.

In addition, several songs will be performed from PMO's spring presentation of "Schoolhouse Rock Live!," the musical adaptation of the TV cartoon series that taught history, math, grammar, science and politics through clever, tuneful songs in the 1970s and '80s.

The audience will hear for the first time an original work from composer Gary Fry commissioned by PMO and the Rotary Club. Fry has worked with artists such as Bette Midler, Paul Simon, Billy Joel and John Denver, and his radio and television jingles for McDonald's, Sears, Kellogg's, Anheuser-Busch and many others are heard by millions of people every day.

There will be no intermission during the show; however, the audience is invited to the After Glow Reception in the Long Center lobbies, on the stage and in the St. John Pavilion immediately following the performance.
