Reward to be offered in Grissom bomb threat

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University officials will offer a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person who called in a bomb threat to Grissom Hall today (Tuesday, 3/28).

"Such acts have a significant impact on the campus community that no one appreciates," said Bill Coghill, director of Purdue Safety and Security.

Calling in a bomb threat is considered false reporting in Indiana criminal statutes. It's a Class D felony, punishable by a jail term of up to one-and-a-half years and a fine of up to $10,000.

Coghill said an anonymous male called Grissom's building deputy about 11 a.m. saying that something was going to explode in Grissom at noon. The caller then hung up. The building deputy immediately alerted Purdue police. Purdue police and fire department units then were dispatched to the building, where a mandatory evacuation was ordered.

Police and fire personnel cordoned off the building and went room by room to alert people in the building about the threat, while also conducting a search. Police and fire units stood by until 1 p.m.

Coghill said some midday classes in Grissom were able to be rescheduled in other locations. Northbound traffic on Grant Street was rerouted from the front of Grissom Hall.

Persons with any information on the Grissom Hall bomb threat are asked to call the Purdue Police Department at (765) 494-8221.
