Holocaust Remembrance Conference April 8-9

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Addressing problems at home is at the heart of the 19th annual Holocaust Remembrance Conference.

Scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 8-9, on the West Lafayette campus of Purdue University and at community sites in Greater Lafayette, the conference will focus on "Our Town – Overcoming Prejudice."

"Based on increasing signs we see of the amount of prejudice expressed in our community, our committee said, 'Let's get people to talk and to learn how to get along,'" said Rabbi Gedalyah Engel, conference coordinator.

Several events will feature people with Latino and Hispanic backgrounds. Some workshops will be conducted in English and Spanish, Engel said, to encourage newcomers who are still learning the language.

Programs, panel discussions and workshops will encourage dialogue and help emphasize that discriminating against those who are different is not, or should not be, acceptable, he said.

"Why is this related to the Holocaust?" Engel asked. "Those who have survived to bear witness to what took place during the annihilation of 6 million Jews and an equal number of other Europeans can soberly remind their fellow citizens that attention must always be paid to human rights issues – in our town as well as throughout the world."

All sessions of the conference are free and open to the public.

Among the conference participants are Yaffa Eliach, Holocaust survivor, author and professor of history and literature at Brooklyn College; Ira Fields, MTV producer; Kevin Klose, president and chief executive officer of National Public Radio; Peter Novick, professor emeritus at the University of Chicago and author of "The Holocaust in American Life"; Pat Rios, staff member in the governor's office of immigration; Jose Salinas, Indianapolis attorney; and James McCann, Purdue associate professor of political science.

The conference is sponsored by the Greater Lafayette Holocaust Remembrance Committee with grants from Cinergy Foundation/PSI, Eli Lilly and Co., and the Gannett Foundation. It is held in cooperation with the Diocese of Lafayette-St. Thomas Aquinas Center, Hillel Foundation, Jewish Federation of Greater Lafayette, the Tippecanoe County Ministers Association and University Religious Leaders. It also receives support from Purdue, including the Office of Human Relations, the School of Education, the Ackerman Center for Democratic Citizenship, the School of Liberal Arts and the Jewish Studies Program.
