March 17, 2000 Purdue Theatre Workshop presents an evening of playsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. A Purdue Theatre Workshop in April will feature four works from John Patrick Shanley's "Welcome to the Moon and Other Plays." An ensemble of undergraduate actors will present the plays in the Black Box Theatre, Creative Arts Building 3. This workshop project is directed by Joey Basu, an undergraduate theater major from Carmel, Ind. Performances will be at 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, April 7 and 8, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, April 9. Admission is free. Purdue Theatre Workshops provide opportunities for students and faculty to present work of any kind, experimental in nature or not. These productions, with minimal design elements, emphasize the work of the director and actors. The string of four plays begins with "The Red Coat," a piece about a teen-age boy in the Bronx who waits outside a party for a girl he hardly knows to tell her that he loves her. "Let Us Go Out Into the Starry Night" features a woman in a cafe who approaches a haunted young man who reminds her of Dostoevski. A young man falls in love with a mermaid and decides to introduce her to his friends in "A Lonely Impulse of Delight." In the final piece, "Welcome to the Moon," two old friends decide to commit suicide together, but the two people whom they've always loved arrive in time to stop them.
