March 10, 2000 Moscow Virtuosi chamber orchestra to appearWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Famed chamber orchestra the Moscow Virtuosi, with conductor and violin soloist Vladimir Spivakov, will perform an all-Mozart program at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 30, at Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center at Purdue University. One of the world's pre-eminent chamber ensembles, the Moscow Virtuosi was formed in 1979 by Spivakov, following his conducting debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival. Each member of the Moscow Virtuosi is a top-ranking soloist, drawn from the principal chairs of the great orchestras of the former Soviet Union. In the first years after it was formed, the Moscow Virtuosi appeared internationally to great acclaim, but was absent from the United States, as were all Soviet musicians following the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan and the lapse of the US/USSR Cultural Exchange agreement. The orchestra made its debut in this country in 1987. Spivakov, an internationally acclaimed violinist and conductor, in September became music director and principal conductor of the Russian National Orchestra. Several members of the Moscow Virtuosi have been invited to join the Russian National Orchestra, and the chamber orchestra will perform with the national orchestra in the future. "I am pleased to bring the Moscow Virtuosi's wonderful musicians with me to the RNO," Spivakov said on the occasion of his appointment. "I am honored to assume leadership of one of the world's most extraordinary and vibrant orchestras." While Spivakov is closely identified with the Moscow Virtuosi as its founder, conductor and principal violin soloist and now with the RNO he also has pursued a major solo career around the globe. In addition, Spivakov is a regular guest conductor with the State Symphony of Russia, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome, the London Symphony, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the English and Scottish Chamber Orchestras, and the chamber orchestras of Dresden, Rome and the Netherlands. The program on March 30 will include the Mozart Violin Concerto No.2 in D major, K211; Symphony No. 29 in A major, K201; Sinfonia Concertante in E flat major, K364; and Symphony No. 24 in B flat major, K182. Presented by Purdue Convocations as a part of the Loeb Music Collection, the Moscow Virtuosi concert is sponsored in part by the Friends of Convocations, the donor organization that supports Purdue Convocations programming and special initiatives. Tickets are $23 for the public and $15 for Purdue students. Discounts are available to groups of 15 or more. Charge by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.
