March 3, 2000 Purdue Newsreel captures '99 highlights on videoWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The 45th edition of the Purdue Newsreel is available for viewing from the Instructional Media Center in the Purdue Undergraduate Library or for purchase from the Purdue Alumni Association. The 21-minute program, which highlights Purdue events from 1999, was produced by the Office of University Relations. The movie, "1999 Purdue Newsreel: On Top and Rising," is sponsored by the Alumni Association, the Alumni Foundation and the Office of the President. It is shown to Purdue alumni clubs around the world. The 1999 Newsreel is narrated by 1958 Purdue graduate John Hultman, who is a retired news anchor from WBBM Newsradio in Chicago. The program was produced and directed by Ray Cubberley, assistant director of university relations for broadcast services. A copy of the newsreel on VHS videotape can be purchased for $19.95, plus $3 for shipping and handling, from the Purdue Alumni Association, Room 160, Purdue Memorial Union, West Lafayette, Ind. 47906-6212, telephone (765) 494-5175. Highlights in the 1999 newsreel include: record student enrollment; reunion of Purdue astronauts; Purdue students flying on the Vomit Comet; Grand Prix go-cart race; theater performance of "The Gut Girls"; band performance of "1812 Overture"; Purdue Voices of America tour of Australia, New Zealand and Fiji; a new high-tech job fair; commencement; Book of Great Teachers; 21st century conceptual tools in the School of Education; a study of year-round schooling by a professor in Consumer and Family Sciences; the opening of the Institute of Safe, Quiet and Durable Highways; nanotechnology research in physics; a new 737 received by Aviation Technology; the School of Management gets a new dean and a new graduate program in Hanover, Germany; a new chancellor for Purdue North Central; transformation of the West Lafayette campus under President Steven C. Beering; dedication of the new Black Cultural Center building; and dedication of the Technology Center at the Purdue Research Park.
