February 18, 2000 Conference brings farmers up to speed on GISWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Farmers, county planners and county officials can take stock of Geographic Information Systems in Indiana at the Midwest GIS 2000 Conference and Workshops on March 6 and 7 at the Indianapolis Convention Center. "Farmers who come will see some of the new applications of GIS and remote sensing that are being developed by Purdue researchers," says Purdue University GIS specialist Mark Ehle. "It could help them decide if they're ready to start using GIS in their farming operations." The Agricultural Development session coordinated by Ehle runs from 9:40 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 7. It includes talks on the use of digital soil maps, correlating yield monitor data and field attributes, using GIS to create the permitted livestock operation database and the LESA model for farmland preservation, detecting crop hail and wind damage with GIS, and measuring leaf chlorophyll and nitrogen content with remote sensing. Other sessions that run concurrently with the agricultural session focus on uses of GIS in transportation and utilities, the public sector, and the environment and natural resources. The first day includes workshops on global positioning systems, designing maps, fundamentals of GIS, federal standards for data sharing and GIS maps on the Internet. Participants who preregister before Feb. 25 pay $75 for the conference, plus an additional fee per workshop. On-site registration costs $100 per person. For more information or to preregister, contact Kathy McCarter, The Polis Center, 1200 Waterway Blvd., Indianapolis, IN 46202, (317) 274-8400, fax (317) 278-1830, kmccarte@iupui.edu or use the Web site. The event is sponsored by University Geographic Information Systems Alliance members, which includes Ball State University, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, the Indiana Geology Survey, Indiana State University, Indiana University, the Purdue Laboratory for Applications of Remote Sensing, Purdue University and The Polis Center at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
