Peabody Trio to play 'Quartet for the End of Time'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Peabody Trio, with special guest clarinetist Charles Neidich, will perform at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, at Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center at Purdue University.

Comprised of pianist Seth Knopp, violinist Violaine Melancon and cellist Thomas Kraines, the Peabody Trio will play Beethoven's Trio in G-Major, Opus 121a, Schnittke's Trio (1985/1992), and Olivier Messiaen's seldom-heard "Quartet for the End of Time," featuring Neidich. The French composer wrote the quartet in 1940 while he was in a prison camp. He wrote the piece as a testimony of hope especially for the instruments his fellow prisoners played, and the Peabody Trio performs it as a tribute to the new millennium.

Since winning the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1989, the Peabody Trio established itself as one of the leading piano trios in the world. Equally committed to the performance of new music and classics of the repertoire, the trio currently serves as the resident faculty ensemble of the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, a position it has held since 1989. The trio gave its New York debut in 1990 at Alice Tully Hall and has since toured extensively both in the United States and abroad and performed in many of the most important concert halls and festivals in North America.

A special "Informance" is scheduled at 7 p.m. before the concert in Stewart Center, Room 206. Members of the trio will talk about their music and the Messiaen quartet in particular.

Tickets to the March 8 concert are $18 for the public and $13 for Purdue students. Discounts are available to groups of 15 or more. Charge by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.

Presented by Purdue Convocations as part of the Loeb Music Collection, the Peabody Trio is sponsored in part by the Friends of Convocations, the donor organization that supports Convocations programming and special initiatives.
