Technology showcase to feature
innovative teaching methods
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. More than 60 innovations in teaching and technology will be on display late this month during the annual Teaching, Learning and Technology Showcase at Purdue University.
Scheduled for Feb. 29 through March 1 on the third floor of Stewart Center, the showcase will include workshops, poster sessions, vendor displays and a feature presentation on intellectual property.
The showcase is free and open to the public. Registration kiosks, where attendees will receive program packets, will be located on the third floor of Stewart Center. Purdue faculty and staff can register the technological way by simply swiping their Purdue identification cards at the kiosks.
The event opens at 8:30 a.m. Feb. 29 with a feature presentation by Peter Dunn, assistant vice president for research administration. Dunn will discuss "Intellectual Property Who Owns It?" in Room 322, Stewart Center.
Poster sessions are scheduled for 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Feb. 29 and 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. March 1 in Rooms 302, 306 and 310, Stewart Center.
John Campbell, director of the Multimedia Instructional Development Center, said visiting the poster sessions will be extremely beneficial to all faculty and staff.
"From the feedback we've had the last couple of years, the electronic poster sessions are keys to this program," he said. "We have a 50 percent increase from last year as faculty are really thrilled to showcase and share what they are doing in the way of teaching and using technology."
Some of the sessions:
Development of a Computer-Based Program Using a Virtual Baby to Teach APGAR Scoring, by Jane Kirkpatrick, associate professor of nursing, and Tristan Johnson, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction.
Development of Java Applets for Interactive Demonstration of Fundamental Concepts in Mechanical Engineering Courses, by Carl Wassgren Jr., assistant professor, Charles Krousgrill Jr., professor, and Patrick Carmody, graduate research assistant.
Joint University Collaboration Via Videoconferencing Systems, by Cynthia Stohl, the Margaret Church Distinguished Professor of Communication and head of the Department of Communication.
Other displays will feature the Internet classroom, streaming video for instructional content and information about the Teaching for Tomorrow award program.
Workshops are scheduled for the afternoon of March 1 and include "Jumping on the Virtual Bandwagon: New Products and Resources for a New Millennium," "Creating a Virtual Classroom," and "Going Virtual at Purdue University in Indiana: Opportunities and Advice."
Vendor displays in Rooms 311, 313, 314 and 318 will be open from 10:30 a.m. until noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 29 and from 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. March 1. Vendors that will have booths include Apple Computer, Dell, Graham-Bell Industries, HT Medical Systems, Midwest Visuals, Purdue Printing Services and Wireless Information Networks.
