TAP students ready to interview for summer internships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The deadline is fast approaching for Indiana employers to hire summer interns from Purdue University's Technical Assistance Program.

Businesses, industries and municipalities interested in hiring TAP interns should contact Darcy Anderson, TAP's summer intern coordinator, by Friday, Feb. 25. Interviews should be scheduled by Friday, March 31. Students and employers negotiate salaries.

Since 1988, more than 450 undergraduate and graduate engineering, technology and management students have worked for 273 Hoosier employers through TAP's Summer Intern Program.

"Our program helps Indiana businesses and municipalities find well-qualified interns without spending excessive time in the recruiting and hiring process," Anderson said.

Because of their diverse backgrounds, students can help in areas such as e-commerce, Web site development, computer programming, software selection, production process improvement, plant layout, product development, computer-aided design, construction inspection and surveying. In addition, the intern program provides access to Purdue's faculty expertise for both the students and companies.

Bo-Witt Products Inc., an Edinburgh, Ind., manufacturer of fiberglass-reinforced plastics, employs summer interns from Purdue. "Interns have allowed us to focus on specific projects without diluting our own technical resources," said Will Bobbs Jr., the company's vice president of operations.

For 13 years, TAP also has provided university resources to help more than 3,000 Indiana businesses, industries and government organizations implement new and advanced technologies to boost the state's economy. In addition to the intern program, TAP provides year-round technical assistance and technical information.

"Interns not only provide additional help during the summer, but often provide new insights into company processes that can result in significant improvements," Anderson said. "Furthermore, many employers utilize the summer intern program to find prospective full-time employees."
