Stress management workshop offered

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University Extension is sponsoring a March 4 stress management workshop, "Rural Lifestyles and Relationships Under Stress," for families in southeastern Indiana.

The free event will be at the Scottsburg Inn in Scottsburg. It is part of a series of workshops being planned by the Southeastern Indiana Agriculture in Transition team.

The facilitator for the event is Ted Bowman, a professor at the University of Minnesota and independent educator and trainer. He is the author of the book, "Loss of Dreams: A Special Kind of Grief," and he specializes in dealing with rural individuals and families who often face change and transition.

"There is a connection between grieving and facing lost dreams," Bowman said. "Those who want to get on with their lives may have to face their losses in order to move forward. Healing is possible even when curing is not."

Three separate sessions will be offered at the workshop. Participants may choose to attend any or all sessions. Registration will begin 15 minutes before the start of each session. The first session, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, is geared toward individuals in service professions, such as public officials, attorneys and lending institutions. This session will focus on providing tips for professionals who deal with grief issues, as well as dealing with individuals who are experiencing change in their lives.

The afternoon session, from 1:15 until 4:30 p.m., is intended for farmers and their families. This session will deal primarily with personal issues, such as economic loss, handling grief, re-evaluating goals and dreams, and moving toward new goals.

The final session of the day, from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m., is again geared toward the farm family, focusing on communication in times of crisis and change.

For more information about this workshop or to receive registration information, contact Tom Springstun at the Scott County office of the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, (812) 752-8450, thomas.springstun@ces.purdue.edu.

The Extension Service also maintains a Web site, Indiana Agriculture in Transition, with information to help Indiana farm families adjust to the changing agricultural economy.
