February 4, 2000 Dialogues promote discussion of differencesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Diversity Dialogues, a series of conversations to promote understanding, starts its spring schedule at noon Monday (2/7), in Room B2, Stone Hall. The series, co-sponsored by the Purdue Bahai Club and the Purdue Diversity Resource Office, will feature guided discussions between two people with a specific thing in common and a specific difference, said Alan Manifold, series coordinator who is systems implementation manager at Purdue Libraries. Speakers will talk about what it means to be who they are, and what impact their similarities and differences have on their lives. When people talk openly about their differences, good things happen, Manifold said. "Anything we don't talk about acquires a sense of mystery, and mystery always carries with it at least a trace of fear. When we talk about things, we are more likely to learn the truth, and truth is a powerful weapon against fear." The Monday program will feature two Hoosiers, one gay and one straight, Manifold said. Other dialogues scheduled are an African-American man and a Hispanic man on March 6, Purdue employees with and without disabilities on April 10, and a younger and an older African-American on May 1. All sessions will be at noon in Room B2, Stone Hall. Attendees are invited to bring their lunches. CONTACT: Manifold, (765) 494-2857; manifold@purdue.edu
