Indiana financial aid deadline approaching

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Indiana parents, college students and high school seniors need to be thinking about the 2000-2001 school year, or at least how they are going to pay for college.

Hoosiers must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by March 1 in order to be eligible for college, state and university need-based financial aid for the 2000-2001 school year. "If forms are turned in late, students will still be eligible for federal Pell Grants and student loans, but to have a chance at more gift assistance, the March 1 deadline must be met.," said Joyce Hall, director of financial aid at Purdue University. "Financial aid is really a first-come, first-served situation."

High school students can pick up forms from their high school guidance office. Students also can file the financial aid form electronically. The Web address is http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.

College students who previously have been awarded aid receive renewal forms from the federal government processing center. For those students who filed the form electronically last year, a special code number will be sent to them by the federal processing center. The codes will allow students to file their renewal FAFSA electronically.

College students who have not received aid before can pick up forms from their school's financial aid office or file electronically. Last year's (1999) income tax figures are needed on the forms.
