Purdue sponsors 2 workshops for rural caregivers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Two workshops for rural caregivers of individuals with disabilities will focus on encouragement through shared experiences and empowerment through the development of new skills.

Sponsors for the conference are the Breaking New Ground Resource Center at Purdue University and the Indiana State Department of Health, in conjunction with Clarian Health.

The first workshop will be at the Spring Mill State Park Inn near Mitchell, Ind., March 28-29. An identical workshop will be offered April 4-5 in Kokomo, Ind., at the Hampton Inn and the Healthsouth Rehabilitation Hospital.

"When a disabling injury or illness strikes, it affects the whole family," said Paul Jones, outreach coordinator for Breaking New Ground. "The focus of this conference is on rural caregivers, typically spouses, children and other relatives, and issues that are directly related to them. Professionals working with rural caregivers will also benefit from the workshops."

Each conference will begin on the first evening with an informal reception, including refreshments and entertainment provided by a professional storyteller. The next day's sessions will deal with changing roles in families touched by disability; stress management and communication; and teaching caregivers the importance of becoming their own personal care managers.

The deadline for registration is Feb. 25, and each workshop limited to 50 participants. The cost of the program is $25, which includes lunch, snacks and materials. Those attending the informal evening session will be required to pay their own hotel expenses, which will be $59/double at Spring Mill State Park and $68/double at the Hampton Inn in Kokomo. Scholarships may be available to individuals with disabilities.
