Appointments and promotions John Beelke, assistant director for compensation and benefits in the Department of Personnel Services, on Feb. 1 will become Purdue's personnel director. He succeeds Charlene Hayes, who left the university. The department administers health insurance, retirement plans and employee wellness programs; recruits, hires and orients campus clerical and service employees; and screens applicants for administrative, professional and technical jobs. Beelke joined the Purdue staff in 1973 as business administrator for the Department of Entomology. In September 1984, he became assistant director of personnel services for staff benefits, payroll and insurance. Since 1988, he has managed benefits for the West Lafayette, North Central, Fort Wayne and Calumet campuses. (NOTE TO JOURNALISTS: Head-and-shoulders photo of Beelke available on the ftp web site.) Kevin L. Booker and Brian L. Walters have been appointed patrol officers with the Purdue Police Department. Booker, formerly with the Indiana State University Police Department, holds a bachelor's degree in criminology with a minor in public administration and a master's in public administration, both from ISU. He also is a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. The Indianapolis native also has been an adjunct professor at Ivy Tech State College and a mentor in the ISU Academic Advisement Center. Walters, of Kirklin, Ind., comes to campus from the Frankfort Police Department. He is a Clinton Central High School and Indiana Law Enforcement Academy graduate. He is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran with American Embassy security guard assignments in Peru, Colombia, Morocco, Tunisia and Israel. Cosby, Darlington, Ind., has been named telecommunications operator for the Purdue Police Department. She held a similar position and an advanced reserve police officer assignment with the Crawfordsville Police Department. Faculty and staff honors Stanley M. Shaw, professor and head of the Division of Nuclear Pharmacy, has been awarded the American Pharmaceutical Association's Daniel B. Smith Practice Excellence Award. The award, given for outstanding performance and achievements in the field, will be presented at the organization's annual meeting March 10-14 in Washington. Shaw was selected for the award in recognition of his pioneering efforts in nuclear pharmacy and for his contributions to the profession over 30 years. Holly Mason, professor of pharmacy administration and pharmacy practice and associate head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice, has been named a Fellow of the American Pharmaceutical Association. She will be recognized at the organization's annual meeting March 10-14 in Washington. Alan M. Beck, the Dorothy N. McAllister Professor of Animal Ecology in Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine, has received the 1999 Achievement Award from the Harmony Institute for his dedication and contributions to promoting a harmonious relationship between humans, animals and the natural environment.
