Purdue spring enrollment remains steady

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The number of students enrolled in classes on Purdue's West Lafayette campus remained steady for the spring semester.

Preliminary figures released by the Office of the Registrar on Thursday (1/20) show a total enrollment of 34,769, up 834 from last spring but down 2,993 from the record-setting fall semester total of 37,762. Purdue experienced a nearly identical drop in fall-to-spring enrollment last year, when the total number of students taking classes in the spring was 2,943 fewer than the previous semester.

Registrar Marlesa A. Roney said the decrease in spring enrollment is normal.

"We were within a half of a percent of what we projected," Roney said. "We typically see a decrease in the number of students during the spring semester due to graduations, transfers, and a smaller number of incoming freshman starting college this time of year," she said.

Douglas Christiansen, director of admissions, said: "The overall enrollment strategy was to maintain our existing numbers, and we have succeeded. We will continue to manage the enrollment to assure the academic quality of each of our schools and programs, so we are able to continue to offer the best educational experience for students."

Systemwide, spring semester estimated enrollment is 62,079, down 4,571 from 66,650 in the fall.

There are 28,289 students enrolled in undergraduate programs on the West Lafayette campus, and 6,480 working toward graduate and professional degrees.

Final enrollment figures for Purdue's regional campuses are expected later this month. Systemwide figures include students at West Lafayette, Purdue Calumet, Purdue North Central, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, School of Technology Statewide Delivery System and West Lafayette Extension.
